UvA programmes rise in latest QS World University Rankings
In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Communication & Media Studies are ranked 8th globally. Last year these subject areas, which are bundled by QS, were ranked in 10th place. Several other subject areas have also risen in the rankings – eleven are listed in the top 50 of their discipline.
Besides Communication & Media Studies, these are: Psychology (11), Geography and Area Studies (13), Sociology (14), Linguistics (22), Development Studies (24), Politics and International Studies (31), Economics and Econometrics (41), Modern Languages (43), Medicine (46) and English Language & Literature (48).
In total, 27 of the UvA’s subject areas are listed in the global 150. After the 50th spot, the rankings are done according to group instead of individual university. The following subject areas are listed in the 51-100 group: Philosophy, Computer Science & Information Systems, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, Education, Law. In the 101-150 group: History and Chemistry.
QS formulates the rankings on the basis of the following criteria:
- Reputation among employers – employers give their view on the 10 national and 30 international universities they consider to be the best from which to recruit graduates.
- Reputation among experts in the field – academics are asked to give their view on the 10 national and 30 international universities they believe conduct the best research within their disciplines.
- Research citations – the number of times a research publication is cited in other academic works.
- H-index – Impact (number of citations) is paired to scope (number of articles) of a researcher’s work.
The university-wide QS World University Rankings are always published in the autumn. In 2014 the UvA was ranked 50th in the global list.
