Research Institute of Child Development and Education

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) relocates to Roeterseiland Campus

9 September 2014

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Science’s disciplines of Sociology, Anthropology, Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning, Political Science, Educational Sciences and Child Development, and Communication Science moved into the new buildings at Amsterdam Roeterseiland campus at the end of this summer.

Psychology and the Faculty of Law will also move to the campus in 2015/2016. Amsterdam Roeterseiland Campus is an open city campus situated in Roetersstraat, in the lively, green Plantagebuurt district at the edge of Amsterdam's city centre. The campus provides students with an inspiring study environment that offers high-quality educational facilities and modern ICT provisions.

Teaching and research facilities

Besides lecture and seminar rooms, the campus offers a range of study places and a central Student Service Desk. At the new Library Learning Center, students can request books, study, and meet with fellow students. There are also advanced research facilities housed in LAB, including cubicles and various labs such as the eye-tracking lab, the fMRI lab and the Babylab.

Culture and catering

CREA, the student cultural centre for the UvA and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), can also be found on the campus. CREA offers courses, theatre productions and a place to meet up with fellow students: the CREA Café. The campus and surrounds are also home to many shops, cafés and small restaurants, as well as cultural venues such as the Kriterion cinema, Artis Zoo and Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum.

Clustering on four city campuses

Amsterdam Roeterseiland Campus is part of the UvA’s plan to cluster teaching and research at four open city campuses. These are the Science Park for natural sciences, Amsterdam Roeterseiland campus for social sciences, the City Centre campus for humanities, and finally the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) for Medicine.
These clusters enable the UvA to improve the quality of its facilities for both students and researchers. Clustering also enhances the UvA’s appeal and profile.
