TALIS addresses many issues that all relate to the motivation for, and feasibility of, the work of teachers and school leaders. A wide range of themes was covered. Below, we highlight some of the findings; others can be found in the national report.
- Job satisfaction: Teachers have become more positive about their job. Almost all teachers are satisfied with their work. The number of teachers who see more advantages than disadvantages in the teaching profession has also increased.
- Work-related stress: Around 1 in 10 teachers experiences very high work-related stress. Collegial support, confidence in one’s own professional skills and involvement in decision-making help to reduce work-related stress.
- Initial teacher education: A larger proportion of recently graduated teachers feel (very) well prepared for the profession than in 2018.
- Professional learning: Dutch teachers more often find professional learning activities relevant to their classroom practice than teachers in other countries. Teachers frequently learn by reflecting on their own teaching practice. Dutch teachers – especially those in secondary education – would like to see more focus on learning activities that relate to their individual experiences and needs, and less focus on school-wide learning activities.
- Teacher shortages: One in twenty teachers indicates that they intend to leave the profession within five years, which is lower than in 2018.
